CDCE Announces Spring 2023 Fellow in News Polling

Tydings Hall

CDCE is pleased to announce that Jillian Andres Rothschild is the Spring 2023 Fellow in News Polling.

Jillian will be working with The Washington Post’s polling team—Scott Clement, JPSM M.S. ’17, and Emily Guskin, GVPT ’06. This program allows GVPT Ph.D. students to get additional experience working on surveys from start to finish and exposes them to the news environment.

Jillian noted her appreciation for the opportunity to work in the newsroom with fellow Terps. “I am very grateful to be working with The Washington Post this semester. I have had a number of opportunities to work with polling data at UMD, and I am excited to use these skills in a practical, fast-paced environment. I really enjoy hearing Scott and Emily’s perspectives on survey methodology and their favorite spots on UMD’s campus!”

CDCE’s Director, Professor Mike Hanmer, who helped establish the program has been pleased with the results. “This program provides a unique learning experience for our Ph.D. students and has been a tremendous success,” Hanmer said. He helped recruit Jillian to GVPT and has been her instructor in several classes. “Jillian has an extensive knowledge base in American politics and has developed a strong methodological skill set that will help her contribute from the start. Hanmer added that he “looks forward to learning from the work Jillian helps produce.”

During her fellowship, Jillian will assist in conducting polls spanning a variety of themes and analyzing the data to discover the most interesting findings. “We are thrilled to welcome Jillian to our team this spring and look forward to her contributions in producing groundbreaking polls for The Post’s newsroom,” said Scott Clement, Director of Polling at The Washington Post.
